Twelfth Annual Market Monitoring Report published

26.03.2024

IRG-Rail has published its 12th Annual Market Monitoring Report. This Report covers the rail market developments in 31 European countries and the European level in 2022.

The 12th Annual Market Monitoring report consists of two documents: the Main Report, which presents overall results at the European level and the Working Document,
which provides country-specific details as well as data used to build graphics. All documents can be found here .

The Report provides an annual overview of market developments and economic conditions in the railway sector and allows comparison over time regarding the development and competitiveness within the railway market.
In 2022, the European railway market continued its recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic but not regaining its level in 2019. Moreover, high inflation was observed in all countries in 2022, which reached 8.5% on average compared to 2021.

Each Market Monitoring Report focuses on one or several subjects. This year, the report includes an in-depth analysis of the heterogeneity in European rail network usage and its potential determinants. Furthermore, in the Main Report,
readers can find new indicators on infrastructure managers (number and expenditures), ECTS-enabled network, electrified train-km and railway undertakings’ spendings on energy. More indicators are available in the Working document (high-speed route length, train punctuality, etc.).

IRG-Rail has been publishing Annual Market Monitoring Reports, prepared by its Market Monitoring Working Group, since 2013 and collects the data from its members.
